新約保存了至少三則最早的基督教聖詩和與最早聚會中重要崇拜儀式有關的額外資訊。早期基督徒的聚會藉唱詩來美化的方式並沒有與現代崇拜儀式有所不同,當時典型是由兩個分別的合唱團,在沒有樂器伴奏的情況下,面對面輪流吟唱。羅馬執政官普林尼在致言給皇帝圖拉真時說到基督徒在一大清早便聚在一起”向基督唱詩歌,宛如他是位神”(書信第十卷)。在進入客西馬尼園之前,耶穌基督同他的門徒們唱的一首詩歌(見馬太福音26:30),極有可能是俗稱的哈利詩或讚美詩(Hallel Psalms,在詩篇113-118篇)。這些早期聖詩的遺跡存留於路加與約翰福音以及保羅的書信中,在保羅書信中的詩歌顯示出曾從較早的原作,可能是阿拉姆語,翻譯過來。
最早的基督教詩歌可見於新約中:第一首有時被稱作”宣道詩歌”(Logos Hymn 參見約翰福音1:1-5,11-14),第二首是約西元45年時的”基督是創造及救贖者”(Christ the Creator and Redeemer 參見歌羅西書1:15-20),第三首是”獻給主基督的詩歌”(A Hymn to Christ the Lord 參見腓利比書2:6-11)。
